Kieran Bennett Wins The 2008 UCI Oceania Championships
The Kaka Hill course was fast and rocky, providing plenty of action for cheering fans. Bennett qualified 3rd in Saturday’s seeding run. He also sustained a rear flat in the final corners. Bennett was aware that he had to be fast and not make mistakes on race day. Bennett said that he was feeling confident heading into Sunday’s race. However, he felt a little pressured during morning practice. Bennett knew he was in the running for the title, even though the pressure was building on him. He rode the perfect race, hitting all his lines and keeping to his form. Bennett was joined by only two other riders in the finals, who managed to break the 3-minute mark. Bennett was actually within a second of Justin Leov’s time of 2.57.20 in the finals. Only two riders could beat Bennett. Bennett said, « It was great having all the top NZ downhillers at the race in weekend as a build-up to the international race season. The track was fast, rocky, with barely any pedaling, so staying off brakes was an important part of having a great run. I am thrilled to win the Oceania Title, it is a great confidence booster for the world cup series.

Bennett’s win at the Oceania Championships qualifies him for the New Zealand National Team to the UCI MTB World Championships in Italy later this year. Bennett’s schedule includes all UCI World Cup rounds and select NMBS events from the US as well as Crankworx.
